Congratulations! You made it, you built your online store from scratch.

‘All in all, everything looks pretty good, except one… How to get rid of ‘Powered by Shopify’?’ you might be wondering.

In this blog post, we’ve created a full-fledged guide to help you do it.

But first things first, what is Powered by Shopify for?

What does ‘Powered by Shopify’ mean?

Shopify is a platform that offers a way to quickly launch your dream business and sell products wherever your customers are. The Powered by Shopify badge shows that your store is hosted by Shopify.

There can be different reasons why merchants want to get rid of the link:

  • First, you care about your customers. They may be confused if they see a brand that does not belong to you.
  • Next, you want to create a visual brand identity for your business that resonates with your customers and produces a memorable and cohesive brand experience that makes customers come back for more. The ‘Powered by Shopify’ badge doesn’t fit into this concept.
  • Finally, you’re a visual learner and you want to have a clean footer.

No matter what your reason is, there are a couple of ways you can go about doing it.

Two important things you need to know

Here are some things to know before you start removing the Powered by Shopify message from your store:

  • Before you jump into changing your theme, make extra sure you create a full backup of your website.
  • Since you’re working with the ‘footer.liquid’ file which is located on every page of your webstore, a single missing or incorrect piece of code can negatively impact your site.

Method #1. Using the theme language editor

To remove Powered by Shopify via Edit languages, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Shopify admin, then navigate to Online Store.

5. In the Powered by Shopify bar, type a single space. This will remove a grey text.

6. Click Save

Hooray, the Powered by Shopify line is now deleted from your footer!

Note that all changes apply to the theme you’ve opted for. If you decide to change your Shopify theme, you need to repeat the steps described above.

Method #2. Using the theme code editor

The above method is the simplest way to wipe out the signature. It is perfect for all themes out there, but if it isn’t good for you, you can try another method.

However, there is something you don’t yet know about.

There are two versions of Shopify, updated and classic. And the way of getting rid of the message has some differences for both versions.

How to understand which version you have? Here’s a brief guide:

  • Navigate to your Shopify Dashboard
  • Click Online Stores > Themes > Customize.
  • The themes setting area will display.

The updated version of Shopify lets you move sections at your discretion and the classic version doesn’t have this opportunity.

Now, you know which Shopify version you use. It’s high time to select the method of removing the message accordingly.

Why you might want to keep the signature

Whether to delete this label or not is up to you. But some experts argue that this signature can help you, especially if you’re new to ecommerce business.

There are some good reasons to keep the message.

  • Establishing trust from the start

Shopify has a good reputation. And the ‘Powered by Shopify’ phrase shows your visitors that you’re using a top-rated ecommerce solution that’s safe and secure.

To put it another way, this keeps your store from being associated with something suspicious.

  • Reducing cart abandonment

There are two reasons behind cart abandonment: people are afraid of entering financial information and it’s so tedious to enter.

Knowing that a store is hosted by Shopify can be a good confidence boost when deciding whether or not to enter a credit card number.

Final thoughts

Some people think that different themes have different methods for getting rid of the ‘Powered by Shopify’ message. However, all of the themes follow the same method to do it.
